About the Natural Norway Breast Shells

Natural Norway breast shells have been used by nursing mothers to soothe and protect sore and cracked nipples in Norway for more than 1,000 years.  The shells are today provided to breast feeding mums suffering from nipple soreness by many Norwegian maternity hospitals and are recommended by Norwegian midwives.

The shells are genuine sea shells hand picked off the coast of Northern Norway, then cleaned, boiled and polished to remove any sharp edges.  That’s it – nothing else. The breast shells are completely natural for you and your baby.

What to do:

  • Wash and boil the shells before first use and once a day thereafter
  • Use the shells in between breast feeds.  Place the shells over your nipples and let your bra keep them in position ensuring that the shells fit loosely around your nipples and do not dig into your skin
  • The shells will capture leaking breast milk and their shape will enable your nipples to constantly bathe in the collected milk.  This is comforting as your nipples will be kept moist while the anti-bacterial properties in breast milk can be soothing for sore and cracked nipples.  Empty the shells frequently and let your nipples air dry. Rinse the shells in water before putting them back on
  • If you do not leak enough milk for this ‘bathing’ to take place, gently rub the collected milk into your nipple skin with a clean finger before emptying the shells
  • The shells will also protect your nipples from rubbing against clothing and breast pads, therefore easing discomfort and preventing clothing from sticking to an irritated area of the nipple skin
  • If necessary, you can use a breast pad over the shells to absorb excess milk or to make the shells less visible under clothing

And of course, as with any other similar product, you must always ensure that your baby is latched on properly.

What not to do:

  • Do not use the shells if you suspect you have an infection (e.g. thrush or mastitis)
  • Do not use the shells for several hours at a time – it is important to allow your nipples to breathe once in a while
  • Do not use the shells at night; with any luck that would be for several hours at a time and the shells could dig into your skin without you noticing
  • Do not use the shells if you are allergic to shell fish.  Better safe than sorry although there has been no evidence to suggest that there is a problem.
